Since opening in the 1990s, Hounddogs has rated at or near the top of polls of best campus-area pizzas. It is a University District and Columbus favorite.

Hounddog's was long open 24 hours a day but they've recently rolled that back to 9 AM to 2:30 AM.

Ravari Room, one of campus' few remaining venues for live music is connected to the pizza restaurant.

Pizza is dine-in, carry-out, or delivery (until 3:30 AM on weekends). The large pizza is 16" and a large pepperoni pizza goes for $15.25. Crust is thin and chewy. A garlic crust is available. Pepperoni is the 2" type. Pizza is cut in squares. Hounddog's offers three different sauces: regular, spicy, or howling hot.

Look for the station wagon with the rocket-propelled hounddog out back.

Hungry Howie's at 1428 N. High is the campus outpost of a Michigan-based chain with over 600 stores nationwide. The campus outpost opened in 2009.

Howie’s is delivery or carry-out. Delivery is available to 3 AM.

Very affordable. The 14″ large pepperoni pizza is just $10.

Howie’s gimmick is its flavored crust. Crusts are available in 8 flavors from Asiago Cheese to Ranch. We had the Garlic Herb. I like it. The crust is the star of the Howie’s Pizza. It’s thin and chewy and flavorful. Crust is corn meal-dusted which I always like.

Howie’s is a solid chain pizza. Good. Dependable. Predictable.

Now about all that yellow...

KING'S PIZZA, 1950 N. 4th St.

Stop 11 on 20 Pizzas 20 Weeks was King’s Pizza in the Indianola Park Shopping Center. King’s has been selling pizzas there for nearly a decade.

King’s has an interesting location. From 1905-37, there was an amusement park here. In 1948, they converted it to a shopping center. King’s parking lot sits over the filled-in and paved-over park pool. Xenos Church adjacent to King’s occupies the park’s old dance pavilion.

King’s is open 4 PM to 4 AM daily. Delivery and carry-out only. Staff is friendly and seems glad to have your business. King’s has a huge menu. In addition to pizza and subs, you can get anything from a burger and fries to baked lasagna. Pizza is served in slices and is inexpensive. A large 14″ pepperoni pizza is $7.49 with a coupon.

Pizza is pizza. Wasn’t one of my favorites but your mileage may vary.

MAMA'S PASTA AND BREW, 23 Campus Place

Mama's Pasta and Brew- March 27, 2015

Mama's Pasta and Brew is a small bar at the intersection of two alleys that has somehow outlasted almost every other bar on campus.

It has been a campus fixture since way back in 1977. The building was originally built as a restaurant back in the 1940s.

In addition to beer, Mama's serves pizza, spaghetti, and subs from a tiny kitchen by the bar. Pizza is dine-in or carry-out. No delivery. The large pizza is 14" and a large pepperoni pizza goes for $12.75. Crust is crispy/flaky. Not flavored. Sauce is basic, neither especially sweet or spicy. Pepperoni is the 1" type. Tasty. Pizza is cut in squares.

Mama’s is noted for its colorful regulars, its loyal patrons (There’s a Hall of Fame) and a stuffed moose head that’s a landmark and a rite of passage for graduating Buckeyes.

MIKEY'S LATE NIGHT SLICE, 12 E. Duncan St.

Mikey's Late Night Slice started down in the Short North back in 2009 and became an instant Columbus favorite. It's since grown to 3 locations and a food truck.

Mikey's appeals to college kids, hipsters, and late night revelers with hip graphics, jokey off-color menu item names, unusual featured and signature pizzas, and locations in nightlife-rich areas.

The campus Mkey's on Duncan behind Ledo's. There's another outlet inside The Newport Music Hall. The Duncan location is a small storefront with a counter and stools for dining in and a couple picnic tables out on the sidewalk for warm weather dining. Most patrons take their slice to go. Mikey's is open 3 PM to 3 AM daily.

Mikey's regularly tops polls of the city's favorite pizza. Despite, this it never really appealed all that much to me. Nothing wrong with it. Just not to my particular taste. Your mileage may vary.

OHIO STATE PIZZA, 325 E. Hudson St.

Ohio State Pizza-April 3, 2015

Ohio State Pizza has been at the corner of Indianola and Hudson since 1985.

Ohio State Pizza is chiefly noted for its interesting staff, super low prices (2 XL one-item pizzas for $14.95), great coupons, and the latest late night delivery (until 4 AM) in the area. They also deliver beer and cigarettes and deliver to areas other pizza places won't.

Pizza is delivery or carry-out. No dine-in. The large pizza is 16" and a large pepperoni pizza goes for $11.30 (but much less with a coupon). Pizza is basic. Functional. Good enough but unlikely to be anybody's favorite. Crust is crispy. Not flavored. Sauce and toppings are unremarkable. Tends to be greasy. Cut into squares.

Building was originally a 1920s Pure Oil gas station. Pure Oil wanted its stations to look like quaint English cottages. Not much survives of the original exterior but you can still see the stonework and chimney.

PAPA JOHN'S, 2108 N. High St.

Papa John's started in southern Indiana in 1983 and has grown to one of the country's largest chains with nearly 4,000 locations. Papa John's made it to Columbus in the early 1990s.

Original campus area Papa John's locations were down at Smith Place and High at the southern edge of the University District and up on Hudson near what is now Goodwill.
