May 9, 2016- A flower on the dogwood (Cornus florida) in our University District backyard. It's been a lush, green, and beautiful spring around here. |
Streetcar going south on Neil Ave. near 11th. Mack Hall in background. Mid 1940s. Streetcars stopped running in 1948. Girls are wearing saddleshoes which became popular in the 40s. Cars are late 1930s vintage. There’s an Isaly’s Ice Cream in the building at right. Isaly’s was big on campus in the 1940s. Part of a huge haul of over 500 antique photos and negatives we picked up (cheap) over the weekend. More to come… |
St. John Arena on The Ohio State University campus going up back in October 1956. Look through the steel at lower left and you can see the original Big Bear grocery store on Lane Ave. in the background. Also note the railroad tracks in the foreground. Photographed by Helmer Orton Krehbiel (1914-2009). |
An appallingly ugly box (built 1959) crammed next to a handsome Late Victorian home (built 1907), at the northwest corner of Summit St. and E. 14th Ave. Whoever did this had no soul. |
The neighborhood before there was a neighborhood. Indianola Summit—“The King of All the Real Estate Propositions—invites buyers to come for a picnic, tennis game, and to select a lot on which to build a home on Decoration Day 1904. |
May 30, 2016- Early morning scrapper's shopping carts parked outside Panera on W. 11th Ave. |
June 8, 2007- Indianola K-8 students on their last day at the 1908 Indianola building on E. 16th Ave. Indianola moved to Everett in the Short North for two years before ultimately settling in on Weber where it resides today. Note the tie-dye. Back in the day it was practically the school colors. |
June 13, 2016- Abandoned telephone lines on poles along railroad tracks at the eastern edge of the University District. Note the glass insulators. These poles were probably erected no more recently than the mid-1960s. |
June 20, 2016- Drama skies over the South Campus Gateway as a late afternoon summer storm passes through. |
June 23, 2016- View looking down Campus Place. towards High St. from Pearl Alley. This view won’t be around much longer. High St. redevelopment starts this summer with demolition of just about everything. Even the street itself might be going away. |
July 22, 2016- Summer storm sweeps over city. View from the 18th floor of the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University. |
