High school kids in the All-Ohio State Fair Band marching down Main Street past Schmidt's concession on Opening Day of the 169th Ohio State Fair. |

Former entrance of the old Agriculture and Horticulture Building. 169th Ohio State Fair was marked by a great deal of demolition and construction as a radical makeover and updating of the fairgrounds take place as part of the Expo 2050 initiative. Entrance is to be preserved as part of a new space. New fairgrounds will offer up-to-date infrastructure and attractive new spaces blended with the old as well as a fairgrounds with much more greenspace and much less asphalt. In addition to the Agriculture and Horticulture Building, the 1960s circular Ohio Dept of Transportation building, and several aging warehouses on the eastern edge of the grounds have been demolished. |

Pelotonia riders at the finish line. Early on the morning of Aug 3, 2024, over 6,500 Pelotonia bicyclists (including me) set out from downtown Columbus on trips of 20 to 200 miles to raise funds for cancer research and new treatments at The James. 2024 marks the 16th running of Pelotonia which has raised over a quarter-billion dollars. Hundreds of cancer survivors and ride supporters lined city streets and country roads to support the endeavor. |

Made it up to casa cacao, a new coffee shop in the former Hudson Theater on E Hudson. Really enjoyed it! Distinctive decor featuring Ohio antiquities. Great ambience. Lovely outdoor garden seating. Novel and very good drinks and snacks. Just what you want from a campus spot. Wish we had a dozen more places like this one. And we need way more reuse of historic spaces! |

Statue of legendary Ohio State football player and only 2-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin at entrance to Ohio Stadium. Unveiled August 30, 2024 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Griffin's Heisman-winning season. Griffin also dotted the "i" in Script Ohio at the Buckeyes season-opener the next day. |

So happy for this! The elaborate haunter on Indianola whose Halloween display in honor of his late wife was vandalized and stolen last year is back! Another great show—with added security precautions. (Dead, yellow lawns are endemic in the neighborhood. Central and SE Ohio in Exceptional Drought (per the U.S. Drought Monitor). Just 5" of rain all summer. Twice the usual days hotter than 90º. Driest summer since 1948. 3rd driest ever. In global hottest summer yet of hottest year yet.) |

Very excited by this find. An August 1912 RPPC view of the University District’s Oakland Ave from Aunt Gusta (the boys are standing in front of her house) to her niece Enid back in Caldwell OH. Gusta is proud that Oakland Ave just won the prize for most beautiful flowers in the city. |

Homemade support for Kamala Harris up on Duncan, September 2024. In November, Franklin County bucked the national trend voted almost 2:1 for Harris-Walz. Campus even more ardently supported the Democrats. Over 78% of University District voters cast a ballot for Harris-Walz. What's about to happen isn't our fault. |

Dino-lady mural behind the bar at Fourth Street Taproom & Kitchen, 1810 N 4th Street. |

I love this time of year! Plastic skeleton presides over Halloween 2024 from an Old North Columbus foodtruck. |

Extraordinary Halloween 2024 display at Ghost Beauty, SW corner of Tompkins and Deming. Home Depot 12' skeleton, jack-o'lantern arch, skelly gate, witch's shack, and more! |

Halloween 2024 in full swing here in the University District!! |

Jack-o'lanterns greet Halloween 2024 here in the neighborhood. |

Excited by this serendipitous find. Bought this vintage Halloween postcard on eBay because I liked the art and the price was right. Dealer was way out east somewhere. Paid no attention to the back. Got it in the mail and was delighted and surprised to found it was an invite to Halloween Party in 1911 at the Euclid Academy of Dancing down at Euclid and High. Right here in the University District!! What are the odds? |

Students studying for final exams in the beautiful Campus Reading Room on the 11th Floor of Thompson Library. Once a grim, dark, forbidding place of ancient journals, mysterious stains, and few heavily and hatefully graffitied carrels, the floor was massively renovated in the 2009 building makeover and is now warm and welcoming with wood paneling and floors, Persian rugs, comfy chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of campus. |

Over in the beautiful Thompson Library yesterday, where there are nearly 100 decorative panels of languages and alphabets scattered throughout the building. Was delighted to discover this bit of Sindarin, the writing of Tolkien’s Elves!! |
